USP&E Meeting Africa's Power Deficit
Categories: Company Updates, 2014 (ALL)
June 11, 2014

Africa is the world’s fastest-growing continent, and with this has come the need for more power to drive economic growth. However, presently, Africa suffers a severe power deficit that has emerged as the greatest threat to meeting its economic growth in the future. An African Development Bank report estimates that only 26% of Sub-Saharan Africa’s population has access to electricity and for those who do have, the spectrum of power outages is all too common resulting in a production loss of 12.5% Diesel power offers a stopgap as standby power or as prime power in more remote areas, and the difference in the economic development gains is like the difference between night and day. During power outages, emergency backup electrical generators powered by diesel engines provide reliable, immediate and full strength electric power. Admittedly loss of power does not only occur due to power deficits but it can also be caused by natural disasters but with society’s reliance on power to operate vital technological systems such as can be found in hospitals or in other essential utilities, the need for backup power becomes all the more criticalDiesel powered generators are favored in buildings and other facilities because compared to other technologies they have quick response time and are able to start and absorb a full electrical load within ten seconds of grid power failure. Even where renewable sources such as wind or solar are preferred, the diesel-powered generator still comes in handy as a reliable backup.

USP&E Announces Grand Opening of First Dallas Internet Data Center Build Out
Categories: Company Updates, 2007 (ALL)
November 5, 2007

In just under 8 weeks, US Power is on target to complete its first Dallas-area internet data center build-out just off of Hilcrest for a facility that is located just off the Lyndon Baynes Johnson Freeway later this week. The grand opening has been scheduled for Friday, November 9th, 2007. This turnkey build out included supplying generators, batteries, PDU’s, annunciation, flooring, rigging, craning, startup, ongoing maintenance, and fencing, among other services.

USP&E’s Division is committed to delivering the same level of creative, proactive, flexible service in the data center design/build process that we have provided our clients since 1968. Unlike the traditional design-specify-bid-build process, which costs more, takes more time to execute and requires more resources to manage, USP&E’s Design/Build Data Center Construction Strategy condenses the exercise into a clear and concise process. By fusing design and full-spectrum construction and equipment procurement services, a tighter schedule can be met, costs can be better controlled and unforeseen problems can be eliminated. Our proven methodology is designed to minimize the disruption of your business during deployment, while delivering the highest quality facilities combined with the best absolute best power and environment infrastructure. These are just some of the many services we offer:

  • Assessment & Planning
  • Design
  • Architecture / Engineering
  • Equipment Sourcing & Scheduling
  • Construction / Installation / Integration
  • Commissioning
  • Operations & Maintenance
  • Monitoring

Our approach to every engagement starts with defining and understanding the project requirements for the data center and identifying the business objectives. An assessment and audit of the available assets and inevitable detriments follows this. We then establish the design criteria and create a preliminary design to summarize the associated project build costs.

From this point, the initial design is developed based on the project scope, determined system requirements, and available data center build budget, both time-wise and dollar-wise. A preliminary project timeline is established to minimise construction time and ensure alignment with the project budget.

USP&E is your one-stop shop for critical infrastructure such as generators, UPSs, PDUs, raised flooring, fire suppression and other standard data center equipment. In fact, we purchase most of our equipment as new/surplus or slightly used, but refurbish each piece ourselves. This ensures you receive the best equipment at the lowest possible equipment cost, with the most favorable delivery terms and have it installed by the most skilled craftsman.
