With geopolitical, environmental, and logistical hurdles to overcome, USP&E refurbished 80MW of Caterpillar engines and installed 24MW of new Cat 12CM32 engines, achieving 300% greater reliability and availability. This case study highlights USP&E’s expertise in providing tailored energy solutions to meet the demands of large-scale mining operations.

Background

Powering Mining Operations in Mali

The Loulo-Gounkoto complex in western Mali comprises two mining permits, Loulo and Gounkoto, adjacent to the Senegal border and the Falémé River. Loulo gold mine is owned by Société des Mines de Loulo SA (Loulo), while Gounkoto gold mine is owned by Société des Mines de Gounkoto (Gounko-to).

Challenges

Navigating Complex Geopolitical and Operational Hurdles

Working at the Loulo-Gounkoto complex poses challenges including geopolitical risks, environmental compliance, community relations, safety standards, logistical hurdles, production efficiency, financial risks, and coordination between separate mining permits. The project required complete rebuild of over 80MW of Caterpillar engines, which was performed by USP&E. We also installed 24MW of new zero hour Cat 12CM32 engines.

Solution

Refurbishing and Operating with Enhanced Reliability

USP&E installed new zero hour rated 3 x Cat 12CM32 engines, refurbished 80MW of existing Caterpillar engines, and operated and maintained the power station at 300% greater reliability and availability than ever previously achieved at site.
